Moving home is one of those experiences where the difference between a smooth day and a chaotic one usually comes down to preparation. The more organised you are before moving day, the less you are scrambling to fix things on it.
This moving and packing checklist is designed specifically for residents in Dubai, covering everything you need to do in the weeks leading up to your move, on the day itself and once you have arrived at your new home.
Save it, print it or bookmark it. You will thank yourself later.
Six to Eight Weeks Before Your Move
The earlier you start and book moving companies like Just Click Movers, the more control you have. Most of the stress people experience on moving day is the result of decisions that were left too late. Starting six to eight weeks out gives you enough runway to sort everything properly without rushing.
Decide What You Are Moving and What You Are Not
Before you book anything or buy a single box, go through your home and make honest decisions about what is coming with you. Decluttering before a move saves you money, reduces the volume of packing and means you are not paying to transport things you no longer need or want. Donate, sell or dispose of anything that does not deserve a place in your new home.
Research and Book Your Moving Company
Dubai has a lot of moving companies but they vary significantly in quality, reliability and pricing. Research at least two to three licensed companies, read verified reviews, get written quotes and compare what is included. Do not leave this until the last week, especially if you are moving at the end of the month when demand is highest across the city.
Notify Your Landlord
If you are renting, check your tenancy contract for the required notice period before vacating. In Dubai, most contracts require 30 to 90 days notice depending on the agreement. Missing this can result in penalty clauses or the loss of your security deposit. Get your notice in writing and keep a copy.
Start Sourcing Packing Materials
If you are packing yourself, start collecting boxes, bubble wrap, packing tape, markers and labels early. Quality packing materials make a significant difference to how well your belongings survive the move, particularly fragile items. Double-walled boxes are worth the extra cost for heavy items like books, kitchenware and appliances.
Four Weeks Before Your Move
By this point your moving company should be booked and you should have a clear picture of what is coming with you. Now it is time to start working through the practical admin side of the move. Four weeks out is the right time to start notifying the people and organisations that need to know about your change of address.
Update Your Address on Official Documents
In Dubai, your Emirates ID and visa are tied to your registered address. Notify the relevant authorities of your new address once it is confirmed. You will also need to update your address with your bank, insurance providers, utility companies, employer and any subscriptions or deliveries you receive regularly.
Transfer or Cancel Utilities
Contact DEWA to arrange the transfer of your electricity and water account to your new address. Do not leave this until moving week as processing times can vary. If your new property has a different setup, confirm the connection status before you move in so you are not arriving to a property without power or water.
Book a Cleaning Service for Your Current Property
Most landlords in Dubai require the property to be professionally cleaned before handover. Booking early means you get your preferred date and are not scrambling to find availability in the final few days before you hand over the keys.
Sort Out Parking and Building Access at Both Ends
Check whether your current building and your new building have any requirements for move-out and move-in. Some buildings in Dubai, particularly in gated communities, on Palm Jumeirah or in managed towers, require advance notice to management, service elevator bookings or temporary parking permits for moving trucks.
Two Weeks Before Your Move
You are in the final stretch. The focus now shifts from admin to physical preparation. Two weeks out is when packing should begin in earnest, starting with the rooms and items you use least frequently.
Start Packing Non-Essential Items
Pack seasonal clothing, books, decorative items, spare bedding and anything else you will not need before moving day. Label every box clearly with the contents and the room it belongs to at the new address. This makes unpacking considerably faster and avoids the frustration of hunting through twenty identical brown boxes for something specific.
Pack a Separate Essentials Box
Set aside one clearly marked box or bag that contains everything you will need for the first night in your new home. This should include toiletries, phone chargers, a change of clothes, basic kitchen items, important documents and any medication. This box goes last on the truck and comes off first. Do not let it get buried.
Confirm All Details With Your Moving Company
Call your moving company to reconfirm the date, arrival time, address, floor level, any access requirements and any special instructions for fragile or valuable items. Confirming a week or two out means any issues are caught early rather than on the morning of the move.
Return Borrowed Items and Collect Your Own
Now is a good time to return anything you have borrowed from neighbours or friends and to collect anything of yours that is being kept elsewhere. The last thing you want is to realise after the move that your items are still scattered between three different addresses.
One Week Before Your Move

Finish Packing All Non-Essential Rooms
By this point, rooms like the guest bedroom, study or storage areas should be fully packed and ready. Only your daily essentials should remain unpacked at this stage.
Defrost Your Fridge and Freezer
Switch off your fridge and freezer at least 24 to 48 hours before moving day so they are fully defrosted and dry before they are moved. Moving a fridge that still has moisture inside can cause damage during transit. Use up or discard perishables in the days leading up to the move.
Disassemble Large Furniture if Needed
If you have furniture that needs to be disassembled for transport, arrange for this to be done before moving day where possible. If your moving company includes a carpenter, confirm in advance which pieces they will be disassembling so everyone is aligned on the day.
Charge All Electronic Devices
Make sure laptops, tablets, phones and any other devices are fully charged the night before. Moving days tend to be long and having dead devices when you need to make calls, check addresses or contact your moving company is an unnecessary complication.
On Moving Day
Be Present and Available
Try to be at your property when the moving team arrives. Walking them through the job at the start – which items are fragile, which rooms are packed and ready, any items that need special handling – saves time and prevents misunderstandings mid-move.
Do a Final Walkthrough Before Leaving
Before you hand over the keys, walk through every room, check every cupboard, look under beds and in storage spaces and make sure nothing has been left behind. Check the balcony, garage, storage room and any outdoor areas. It is easy to miss things when you are caught up in the rush of moving day.
Photograph the Condition of Your Old Property
Take dated photographs of every room before you leave, including walls, floors, fixtures and any existing damage. This protects your security deposit and gives you a clear record if there is any dispute with your landlord during the handover process.
Check Items on Arrival at Your New Home
As items are brought into your new home, do a quick check for any damage that may have occurred during the move. If anything has been damaged, note it immediately and raise it with your moving company before the team leaves. Doing it on the day is considerably easier than trying to resolve it afterwards.
After Your Move
Unpack Essentials First
Start with your essentials box, then the kitchen and bathrooms, then bedrooms and living areas. Trying to unpack everything at once is overwhelming. Work through one room at a time and you will feel settled much faster.
Check All Utilities Are Working
Verify that DEWA services are active, that your internet has been set up and that all appliances are functioning correctly. Report any maintenance issues to your landlord or building management as soon as you notice them, with photos as supporting evidence.
Update Your Emirates ID Address
Updating your residential address on your Emirates ID is a legal requirement in the UAE when you move. Visit an ICA service centre or use the ICA smart app to process the update. Keep your new tenancy contract handy as you will need it during the process.
Register Your New Address With Relevant Authorities
Depending on your circumstances, you may need to update your address with the Road and Transport Authority (RTA) for your vehicle registration, your children’s school, your health insurance provider and your employer’s HR department. Getting these updates done in the first week prevents administrative issues further down the line.
Introduce Yourself to Building Management
If you have moved into a managed building or gated community, register with building management as soon as possible. This gives you access to facilities, parking permits, maintenance request systems and any community notices relevant to your new address.
